ChatGPT Ads Rejected? The 7 Real Reasons (and How to Fix Each)
Since ChatGPT Ads went self-serve, most rejections we see trace back to the same seven causes. Six of them you can find and fix yourself — before resubmitting.
| # | Cause | Detected by AdBot Inspector? |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | WAF/CDN blocks OAI-AdsBot | ✅ |
| 2 | JS-only shell page | ✅ |
| 3 | robots.txt disallows the crawler | ✅ |
| 4 | Prohibited-category content | ✅ |
| 5 | OpenAI/ChatGPT impersonation | ✅ |
| 6 | Misleading claims | ✅ |
| 7 | Ad–landing relevance mismatch | ✅ |
1. Your WAF blocks OAI-AdsBot
Symptom: ad stuck in "pending review" forever, or rejected with no detail. Why: Cloudflare, Akamai, DataDome, and Imperva challenge unknown crawlers; OpenAI publishes no IP allowlist for OAI-AdsBot, so default bot rules can block it. Fix: add a rule allowing the OAI-AdsBot and OAI-SearchBot user-agents at your WAF, and verify with a crawl simulation (see the tool below).
2. Your page is a JavaScript shell
Symptom: ad approved but relevance/quality seems inexplicably low. Why: a client-side rendered SPA hands crawlers an empty skeleton. Assume OAI-AdsBot does not execute JS. Fix: server-side render your landing page, or ship a static pre-render, so title/H1/copy exist in raw HTML.
3. robots.txt says no
Symptom: same as #1 — a crawl that never happens. Why: broad bot disallow rules inherited from an old anti-scraping policy. Fix: explicitly allow OAI-AdsBot and OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI's advertiser guidance requires both to be reachable.
4. Prohibited-category content
Why: OpenAI's ad policies prohibit (or restrict) categories like adult content, alcohol, tobacco/vaping, gambling, firearms, political campaigning, crypto ICOs, high-risk financial services, and prescription/medical claims. Even adjacent wording can trigger a manual look. Fix: remove or reframe the category content; if your business is genuinely in a restricted category, expect limited or no eligibility rather than a workaround.
5. OpenAI / ChatGPT impersonation
Why: branding your page as "ChatGPT-powered by OpenAI" when you're not is a critical violation. Detection scans title, meta, H1, and URL. Fix: remove OpenAI trademarks from identity elements; describe the tech you actually use.
6. Misleading claims
Why: guaranteed-income promises, miracle cures, fake urgency ("only 3 left!"), unverifiable media endorsements, specific income/weight-loss figures. These get pattern-matched at review. Fix: delete unverifiable superlatives; keep claims concrete and provable.
7. Ad–landing mismatch
Why: your ad promises "24/7 AI bookkeeping" but the landing page never mentions bookkeeping. OpenAI checks end-to-end consistency between ad copy, context hints, and page content — title, meta description, and H1 carry the most weight. Fix: mirror your ad's core promise in the H1 and meta description, and use the context-hints field for your true target keywords. (Our tool generates suggested context hints from your page automatically.)
